Word Search for Kids: 2 Free Easy Printables (Ages 6-10)

Two free printable word searches for kids: forward and down only, words a 6 to 10 year old can really read, answer keys included. No email gate.

Every parent knows the restaurant scenario: food ordered, twenty minutes to fill. A kids word search is the cheapest fix there is, provided the puzzle was built for kids in the first place. Most weren't. They hide CAT diagonally backwards and then everyone wonders why the six-year-old quit.

These two are built differently. Words run forward and down only. No diagonals and nothing backwards. Every word is one a kid between about six and ten can read without help, and that's the whole trick. An easy word search for kids should end in a finished puzzle, not tears.

Each free printable word search for kids on this page is a two-page PDF: the puzzle, then an answer key with every word highlighted so you can check it without solving it yourself. Clean black and white, US Letter, print at 100%. No email gate.

Printable 1: the everyday one (12x12, 12 words)

Twelve words a first or second grader will recognize on sight. It earns its keep in waiting rooms and restaurants, and it works for quiet classroom time because it needs zero explanation.

The full list:

PUPPY, RAINBOW, PIZZA, RECESS, BUBBLES, CRAYON, DINOSAUR, COOKIES, PIRATE, ROCKET, JUNGLE, SOCCER

Printable 2: the animals one (13x13, 14 words)

Fourteen animals in a 13x13 grid, same rules: forward and down only. Slightly bigger grid, slightly longer words. A confident reader clears it solo. A newer reader gets there with company. ELEPHANT and KANGAROO are the long hauls; the rest come fast.

When these get too easy, diagonals are the next step up. The summer word search post has a fair 15x15 with diagonals, and the hard word search printables post is where the older siblings go. For early readers who do better with bigger letters, there's a large print word search post too.

Make your own kids word search

Here's the parent tip that earns this section its place: kids hunt for their own name first, every time. Our word search maker can hide their name, their friends, their pets, the street you live on.

Type the list and choose the difficulty. The preview shows the finished puzzle before you spend anything, and no account is needed. The download costs $9.99 once: a print-ready PDF bundle in four sizes plus the answer key, with one free round of edits for when you learn the best friend's name has two Ns.

Make a word search with your kid's own words

It also makes a decent birthday-party activity: one puzzle with every guest's name hidden in it, printed once per kid.

FAQ

What ages are these puzzles for?

Roughly six to ten. The 12x12 suits first and second graders, and the 13x13 animals grid stretches a bit further. Both stick to forward and down, so nobody needs the trick of reading backwards.

Why no diagonals or backwards words?

Because that's where young solvers stall out. Take those away and the puzzle gets finished, which is the whole point. Older kids can graduate to the diagonal grids linked above.

Are the answer keys included?

Yes, page two of each PDF, with the words highlighted. Print both pages or just the first, your call.
